Icons and the wonder of them……..

Standard

Today is Gustav Klimt’s 150th birthday. Had he not snuffed it and still been alive.

One of my favourite artists of all time. You see I have a thing about the use of gold in paintings. I love it. In old paintings that is. Like gold used in icons.

iconsplural of i·con (Noun)

Noun:
  1. A painting of Christ or another holy figure, used as an aid to devotion in the Byzantine and other Eastern Churches.
  2. A person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something: “icon of manhood”.

In the Louvre in Paris, there is a whole massive room reserved just for icons. It’s huge and I’ve been there. It brought tears to my eyes and I guess there must be something in them that speaks to my soul. Been to the Cistern Chapel. It left me cold. (well the tourists did) but this room filled with these ancient paintings just filled me with such joy and hope and awe.
